People Who Fear Flying

Any comments or advice regarding this website well be welcomed and much appreciated.

Our Research Findings

"40% of the population of the UK are afraid of flying”. One in six of the adult population - so you are not alone.

Although flying in aeroplanes is supposed to be one of the safest forms of transport. If you have a fear of flying you probably know this already. And you know that, statistically, it is more dangerous to walk around any town or city. You know these facts, but this does not stop your fear of flying because a phobia is not a rational process, so facts and statistics do little to calm your fears.

Fear of flying is a phobia. It is a “gut reaction” of anxiety that is triggered in by being in a place or, in some cases, by even thinking about flying. It may be a quite mild phobia or a severe one but it is a phobia. Simple phobias involve one fear - such as wasps, lifts, etc. Complex phobias such as that of flying, involve a number of fears such as the fear of being in a confined place, fear involving the safety of the plane, fear of falling, and fear of panicking and losing self control, not being in control of the plane, the claustrophobia, the being told what to do by people in uniform, the fatigue, the knowing that your life could end in a blazing fireball at any instant - that kind of thing. Pretty much you think that you are at the mercy of the pilot, the cabin crew, Boeing and Al Qu`aeda.

The real cost of having a flying phobia is the loss of self respect and self esteem though not being a control of one’s own responses. Because their fear of flying is outside their control and is not shared by their family and friends. They try, often with success, to hide their fear from others because they inaccurately perceive it as something to be ashamed of. They will avoid going on foreign holidays with their family, giving excuses like “I prefer to have holiday in Britain; foreign holidays increase the likelihood of getting skin cancer, etc.” Also, they may be embarrassed to tell their colleagues that they have a fear of flying. They will tell their colleagues excuses like “I prefer to drive to far away business meetings because it enables me to think, plan or I am concerned about the environmental impacts.”

Most people who fear flying do actually fly, but only when they absolutely have to and as a last resort because they have no other choice. When they arrive, they may take quite a while to get over their outward journey - and then almost immediately will begin imagining the ordeal of the return journey.

For some people such fears of flying become so strong and over-powering that it makes air travel impossible. Even the thought of being on a plane can cause them a panic attack, shaking or hyperventilating. This kind of person will avoid and/or turn down promotion, change their jobs or even apply for a jobs that might not require travelling by plane.
Some people will develop a fear of flying as a result of news coverage of an air crashes. Those are shocking events with dozens or hundreds of deaths. Such news coverage will show photographs of the lined-up bodies, the smoking debris, the television shots of masses of grieving relatives at the destination airport.

Some people who used to fly, now, would avoid flying altogether, because they really are concerned about the future of the planet. In just one long-haul flight, you can use up your sustainable budget of greenhouse gas emission for several years.
